Heat Transfer Vinyl
Heat Transfer Vinyl (HTV)
Heat Transfer Vinyl, or HTV, is a specialty vinyl designed for use on apparel and other fabric-based items. Designs are created using design software and cut into vinyl with a cutting machine. The excess vinyl is then carefully removed by hand to reveal the design, which is heat-pressed onto the material.
This process can be more hands-on and time-intensive than sublimation or embroidery, but that’s also part of what makes it special. Each piece involves thoughtful preparation, precision, and care from start to finish.
What I love most about HTV is the variety. There are so many fun and creative options to work with, including:
Glitter
Metallic
Reflective
Shiny or matte finishes
Glow-in-the-dark
UV color-changing
Puff
These specialty finishes allow for playful, eye-catching designs and textures you simply can’t achieve with other methods. But also can limit some of the blending of unique colors.
HTV works best for designs that are more simple and not overly color-heavy, making it a great option for names, numbers, bold graphics, and statement accents.
HTV is where my apparel creation journey began. It’s a versatile, creative option when you want something fun, bold, and can be full of personality.
